Oscar Performance

If you have ever watched the Oscars, or any other award show for that matter, you know that there are many great nominees, but only one winner. While acting may not be your day job, putting in an Oscar performance is something that everyone can do:

1) Acknowledging your award: Think about how the best Oscar winners receive their award: with grace, humility, appreciation, and often emotion. They acknowledged their co-workers, managers, and mentors. Each time you have a "win" at work, how do you act?

2) Love your work: While every show business person may covet an Oscar, is winning an Oscar their real goal? Do they work to get an Oscar, or they do their work because they enjoy the work? If you enjoy your work, over time you will get very good at it... and be recognized for it. And the corollary: if you don't enjoy doing your work, you'll never get an Oscar.

3) Time frame: Most of us are used to extremely quick cycles: an hour, a day, or maybe a month at the most. A movie can take years from conception, to production, to release. Beyond your formal education, what activities have you engaged in that took more than a few years from start to finish? Long-cycle activities require a stick-to-itiveness that most people don't have, but should.

This week's action item: What do you need to do each and every day for an Oscar performance? You may not get an Oscar for your efforts, but often a smile or a thank you feels just as good.
