Giving Credit
Doesn't it feel good when someone recognizes the great work that you do each day? And conversely, doesn't it feel awful when your faults are publicly exposed?
Too often, we jump on the "fault" bandwagon, and don't give credit to others for the great things that they do. Yet, there are so many ways of giving others recognition - here are just a few:
- Introduce someone else as an expert: you'll get credit for making the introduction.
- Put your boss' name on the presentation: your boss will repay the favor later - and may insist on your name being there too.
- Highlight the expertise of your staff: they'll work harder for you because you've shared the limelight.
- Suggest a different candidate: you will develop a reputation for being honest
- Use "We" instead of "I": your team will appreciate the recognition - and work harder for it.
This week's action item: Find a way, either today or tomorrow, to give someone credit. The more you do it, the easier it becomes - and the sooner you will see the benefits. A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle.
